A spectre is haunting American politics. He began as a cloud no bigger than a man’s hand. The sole independent member of the US Senate, a self-proclaimed socialist in the land of Joe McCarthy. Arguably robbed of the democratic nomination in 2016, he has come back like a political Muhammad Ali and is now the front runner to face Donald Trump in November. Everything from Bloomberg’s billions to ‘Bernie bro’ smears, labelling him too white, too male, too old fashioned, too blue collar to carry the banner of FDR – none of it has stopped him. Inderjeet Parmar has been writing about this with crystal clarity. He’s professor of International Politics at City University, London, so we invited him into the Sputnik studio to help us forecast what might happen over the next few weeks in the race to be the Democratic presidential candidate.
