IDU: Why do we want to go to Mars?

Earlier this year, the Mars Perseverance rover successfully landed on the red planet. The goal? To collect rock samples and other specimens to bring back to earth - in about 10 years. What is the fascination with humans colonizing Mars? Will we ever actually get to Mars and who will be brave enough to attempt the first human mission?
