Kursk. Shoulder to shoulder

Ivan Kovalyov evacuated his mother from the burning town of Sudzha in an armored truck, while he narrowly escaped on foot, walking 15 kilometers through fields and dodging drones. He filmed his entire journey on his phone, capturing the full-scale incursion of Russia’s Kursk Region by Ukrainian forces. The invasion began at dawn on August 6, 2024, as nationalist battalions and foreign mercenaries crossed the border. In the towns they occupied, they looted, burned houses, and shot at civilian vehicles. While many fled, over 2,000 people were taken captive. Russian forces responded with a counteroffensive, as volunteers and veterans stepped up to defend their land, declaring, “This is our home. We have nowhere else to retreat.”
