Major Spanish newspaper quits X
Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia has announced that it will stop publishing on Elon Musk’s X and will suspend its accounts on the social media platform. In a statement on Thursday, the daily accused X of becoming a “network for conspiracy theories and disinformation” while completely abandoning “effective and reasonable moderation.”
Published since 1881, La Vanguardia is one of Spain’s oldest newspapers. While distributed mainly in Barcelona and Catalonia, it is one of Spain’s most widely read news outlets, and its main X account has a total of 1.3 million followers.
“Since Elon Musk’s arrival, X has been filled with toxic and disorienting content in an increasingly overwhelming way,” the news outlet said in a statement. It noted that under Musk’s management the platform has allowed “ideas that violate human rights, such as hatred of ethnic minorities, misogyny and racism” to run free, all with the sole purpose of making more money.
Jordi Juan, the head of La Vanguardia, said in a statement that the move was a “necessary gesture... made in order not to contribute to the growth of this platform with the traffic” created by the newspaper. Juan accused Musk for his role in the disappearance of “traditional moderation teams that prevented violent or hateful content” from the platform.
“The entities that support conspiracy theories or those that spread hoaxes or fake news have found in X their perfect sounding board to amplify them,” he stated, claiming that the recent US election campaign was an example of this. Juan noted that La Vanguardia will continue to monitor X for information-gathering purposes, and won’t force its journalists to quit the platform.
The announcement came a day after the UK’s The Guardian said it will no longer post on X, calling the platform a “toxic” source of “far-right conspiracy theories and racism.” It also coincided with US president-elect Donald Trump’s announcement that Musk will co-lead a newly created Department of Government Efficiency, an entity that will be tasked with helping reduce wasteful spending by the federal government.
According to Juan, the decision to quit X was made right after Trump’s announcement about creating the new entity over fears about how Musk’s new role may further affect the platform.
Musk purchased X, then known as Twitter, for $44 billion in 2022, and subsequently rebranded it and rolled back most of its censorship policies. The billionaire has been accused of mismanaging the platform ever since, claims he has repeatedly denied.
